Back in October of 2018, Victor Daum embarked upon a one year trip, which began with flying to Santa Ana, California for the 2018 Blading Cup. We caught up with Victor recently to discuss his travels and what he has planned for the remainder of the trip…

If you will, please introduce yourself and what you were up to in France prior to your travels….

My name is Victor Daum, I’m 25 years old and I live in Est of Paris. I’ve been skating for
more than 9 years now. My sponsors are Razors and Nomadeshop, who have supported me since 2016.
Before I began this adventure, I received my Master degree in Management and Gestion. I
had a work/study contact with the Credit Agricole (French bank) as a financial advisor at the
office.

Peux tu brièvement te présenter ? Que faisais tu en France avant de partir ?

Je m’appelle Victor DAUM, j’ai 25 ans et j’habite en région parisienne. Je fais du roller depuis
plus de 9 ans maintenant. Mes sponsors Razorskates et Nomadeshop me soutiennent depuis
2016. Avant de partir à l’aventure j’ai obtenu un diplôme en Management et Gestion. Il s’agissait
d’un Master en alternance que j’effectuais avec le Crédit Agricole en tant que conseiller
bancaire en agence.

Where did the idea for a 1 year trip come from?

I’ve always been very exited by traveling. I already traveled in many European countries and I
really loved those experiences ! So, a few years ago I told myself that someday, if the
opportunity comes, I would do a longer, bigger and further journey, out of the European
borders. I guess it’s important to know the world where you live.
I passed my final exam in June and my work/study contact would end on the 31st of August
in 2018. I didn’t like the work I did all that much and I was thinking more about traveling. I left
the bank and started to properly plan my world tour late in August. I planned this one-year
journey across North America, South America and Asia.

Quand l’idée de partir voyager un an t’est-elle venue et pourquoi ?

J’ai toujours été attiré par les voyages. J’ai déjà voyagé dans plusieurs pays Européens,
c’était à chaque fois une excellente expérience. Il y a quelques années je m’étais dit qu’un
jour, si l’opportunité se présente, que je ferais un plus grand voyage, plus long et plus loin
des frontières Européennes. Je pense qu’il est important de connaître le monde dans lequel
on vit.
J’ai obtenu mon diplôme en Juin et mon contrat d’apprentissage se terminait le 31 aout
2018. Je n’aimais pas particulièrement le travail que je faisais et j’étais plus obstiné par le
voyage. J’ai donc abandonné la banque et commencé sérieusement à préparer mon tour du
monde fin Aout.
C’est comme ca que j’ai prévu ce voyage d’un an en Amérique du Nord, Amérique du Sud et
Asie.

Where and when did you start your trip ?

After over 12 hours of flying, I landed in Los Angeles in the evening on October 30th. Then, I
had the pleasure and luck to meet up with Christian Ridings at his flat located in Long Beach. I
really appreciated his great welcome.
I spent a few day in Long Beach, doing the tourist thing; hanging out to the beach, enjoying
the sunlight and the 25°C temp. I also visited the city, went up to Signal Hill, took in the 360°
landscape, put my skates on and did an insane hill bomb.
With a few moves in a skatepark nearby Christian’s place, I felt confident again on my skates
before heading to Blading Cup. I didn’t skate for a month before the trip because of surgery I
received for Carpal Tunnel in my right wrist.

Où et quand as tu commencé ton voyage ?

Après plus de 12 heures d’avion, je suis arrivé à l’aéroport de Los Angeles dans la soirée du
mardi 30 octobre 2018. Je soir même, j’ai eu le plaisir et la chance de retrouver Christian
Ridings à son appartement situé dans Long Beach. J’ai vraiment apprécié l’accueil chaleureux
qu’il m’a fait.
J’ai passé quelques jours à Long Beach à faire le touriste, me promener sur la plage, profiter
du soleil et des 25 degrés. J’ai également visité la ville, je suis monté en haut de Signal Hill,
profité de la vue à 360°, mis mes rollers et descendu de cette immense colline à roller.
Quelques jours avant la Blading Cup, j’ai pu reprendre confiance sur les rollers avant en
m’entraînant au skatepark proche de l’appartement de Christian. Je n’avais pas skaté le mois
précédant mon arrivée aux Etats-Unis car je m’étais fais opéré du Canal Carpien au poignet
droit.

Why California for the first stop ?

I started my world tour in California where I stayed one month. I chose this place for
several reasons, mainly, the Blading Cup takes place every year early in November. I really wanted to go and
experience this international rollerblading event. Many people I know had already planned
to go there as well.
Moreover, the Razors Warehouse is located in Vista, and I’ve been dreaming to go there since I
started skating.
And lastly, California is well known for its nice weather, a great rollerblading community
and many awesome spots. I also wanted to start my trip in an English speaking country to
get used to the language again.

Pourquoi la Californie comme première destination ?

J’ai commencé mon grand voyage en Californie où je suis resté un mois. J’ai choisi cette
destination pour plusieurs raisons.
La Blading Cup à lieu chaque année début Novembre à Santa Ana, j’avais envie d’aller et de
découvrir cet évènement international de roller. Aussi, beaucoup de gens que je connaissais
avaient déjà prévu de s’y rendre.
De plus, la maison mère Razorskates se situe à Vista, j’ai toujours eu envie d’y aller depuis
que j’ai commencé le roller.
Enfin la Californie est réputée pour son climat, sa scène rolleristique et ses nombreux spots
extraordinaires. Je voulais aussi commencer mon voyage dans un pays anglophone pour me
remettre dans le bain et améliorer mon anglais.

How was Blading Cup?
The Blading Cup is one of the most famous international rollerblading event. It took place on
a closed street in Santa Ana, CA. The event cannot be reduced to the blading
competition only. To me the BC lasts 5 days and it’s way more a big rollerblading gathering
than a simple competition. Within those 5 day there was the proper contest, the Valo 6
premiere, an after party at the Razors rental house, the Brandon Memorial & BBQ session at
Paramount skatepark, a Monday night session and it ended on Tuesday with the BC box
session at Tim Franken warehouse in Long Beach.
I was particularly happy to see there some friends I didn’t see for a while as Jonas Hansson,
Marco Ghreim, Korey Waikiki, Stephan Mosselman. I also met a few new people like Gabriel
Adriani, Geoff Accers, Kirill Galushko, Howie Benett, Stephen Babcock, Zack Savage, Joey
Lunger, Kevin Lee, Sylvain Chaussée and more …
Congratulations to Philip Moore who took first place with style and to Nils Janson, his insane
hammers put him in second place.
Comment c’était la Blading Cup 2018 ?
La Blading Cup est l’un des évènements internationaux de roller les plus connus. Ca se
déroule dans une rue de Santa Ana fermée pour l’occasion. La BC ne se résume pas à sa
compétition. Pour moi la BC dure 5 jours et c’est plus un grand rassemblement de rider
qu’une simple compétition. Sur ces 5 jours était organisé, la compétition, l’avant première
de Valo 6, fin de soirées à la maison Razors, la projection et la BBQ session en mémoire de
Brandon Negrete au skatepark de Paramount, la session hebdomadaire du lundi au
skatepark « « et enfin la BC box session le mardi chez Tim Franken.
J’étais particulièrement content de revoir certains amis que je n’avais pas vu depuis
longtemps comme Jonas Hanson, Marco Gheim, Korey Waikiki, Stephan Mosselman mais
aussi de rencontrer de nouvelles personnes comme Gabriel Adriani, Geoff Accers, Kirill
Galushko, Howie Benett, Stefen Babcock, Zack Savages, Joey Lunger, Kevin Lee, Sylvain
Chaussée et d’autres encore …
Félicitations à Philip Moore qui a pris la première place avec style ainsi qu’à Nils Janson dont
ses énormes tricks lui ont permis de finir deuxième.

How was the Razors Warehouse ? Why did you want to go there ?

Back when I started rollerblading I said, ” I’m gonna skate this spot one day”, but I didn’t
expect that could really happen !
Razors is one of the most famous rollerblading brands. They have been supporting me for
more than 3 years. The Razors Warehouse is located in Vista’s industrial area. The
warehouse incorporates a good looking office, a huge storage, and a small yet famous skating
course.
I was just recovering from an eardrum injury, so I was super hyped to get back on skates. I
had a great box and rail session with Geoff in the middle of the storage. Then we moved to
the skating course. Two minutes latter, I slipped and a screw cut deeply the flesh just under
my knee. Geoff drove me immediately to the closest Urgent Care center to get stitches.
Despite that, I was glad to have been to this place and see how the Razors Skates business is like. I
also meet up with Andy Wegener, owner of the company, and talked to him about my world
tour.

Comment c’était la Razors Warehouse ? Pourquoi voulais tu y aller ?

Quand j’ai commencé le roller, j’ai dis une fois « Je skaterai ce spot un jour », mais je ne
pensais pas que ca se produirait !
Razorskates est l’une des marques de roller les plus connues. Cette marque me sponsorise
depuis plus de 3 ans maintenant. La maison mère se situe dans la zone industrielle de Vista,
elle est composée de bureaux, d’un grand entrepôt de stockage et d’un petit espace
d’entraînement bien connu.
Je venais juste de me remettre de ma blessure au tympan, j’étais très content de pouvoir
reskater. Geoff et moi avons skaté un curb et un rail au milieu de l’entrepôt. Nous sommes
ensuite allé continuer cette session qui commençait bien dans le petit skatepark d’à côté. Au
bout de deux minutes, j’ai glissé sur une visse qui dépassait légèrement. La visse a
profondément déchiré ma peau en dessous du genoux. Geoff m’a immédiatement emmené
au centre médical le plus proche pour me faire recoudre. Merci Geoff.
J’étais néanmoins content d’avoir visité la maison mère, de découvrir comment elle
fonctionnait. J’ai également rencontré Andy Wagner, créateur de la marque, et échangé
avec lui à propos de mon voyage.

Where did you stay while you were in California?

When you travel for one year, booking a room can be expensive, especially in California, and
this isn’t the best way to meet locals.
That’s why I managed to be hosted as much as possible in every city. So I particularly want to thank
Christian in Long Beach, Taylor in San Francisco, Geoff in Vista and Logan in San Diego. I’m
pleased to meet all those nice people and share a bit of my adventures with them. At one
point I shared a hotel room with Eddie and John in San Francisco.
So I moved a lot from place to place in California, which was pretty exhausting but that is
how I met so many people – great experiences.

Concernant l’hébergement ?

Quand tu voyages sur une année complète, réserver des hôtels est onéreux,
particulièrement en Californie, et ce n’est pas idéal pour faire correctement connaissance
avec les locaux.
C’est pourquoi j’ai fais en sorte d’être héberger dans chaque ville tant que possible. Je
remercie particulièrement Christian Ridings qui m’a hébergé à Long Beach, Taylor Kobyrn à
San Francisco, Geoffrey Accers in Vista et Logan à San Diego. Je suis content d’avoir
rencontré et partagé une partie de mon aventure avec toutes ces belles personnes. J’ai aussi
partagé une chambre d’hôtel avec Eddie et John la première semaine à San Francisco.
J’ai régulièrement changé d’hôte en Californie, c’était épuisant mais c’est comme ça que j’ai
pu rencontrer autant de gens. Très bonne expérience.

Which city did you enjoyed the most ?

Despite smoggy weather and a really bad air quality due to the huge forest fire close to the
city, San Francisco is definitely the city I enjoyed the most. This is also the place where I
spent the most of my time in California. I booked a hostel with Eddie and John the first week
and then Taylor welcomed me at his place for the second week.
San Francisco is a beautiful city famous for its hills, up and down streets, the Bay Area and its
eclectic culture. That was also the first time I saw as many homeless and crack heads laid on
the streets.
So I joined Cavin in SF after the Blading Cup. He was filming Cameron Talbott for Rollerblade
and offered me to film some clips of me for Nomadeshop as well.
Ivan Narez was celebrating his birthday and everyone was invited to his house in Brentwood.
The party was really nice; Ivan made sure that all of his guests have enough food and drink. I
was pleased to see for my first time a traditional Mexican Pinata. The party ended with a
reviewing of his last masterpiece, Valo 6. Thank you Ivan for you hospitality.
I really enjoyed those times in SF, I met many people there and skated couples time with
BFree, Philip Moore, Erick Garcia, JP Primiano from ButterTV and Danny Malm. Skating famous
California style schools and everyone got good clips from these sessions. Although there were a couple of
injuries, Cavin got enough clips to put them all together and make a short edit of me in SF.

Quelle ville as tu préféré ?

Malgré une météo fumeuse et un air de très mauvaise qualité du à l’énorme feu de forêt à
proximité de la ville, San Francisco est définitivement la ville que j’ai apprécié le plus. C’est
aussi la ville en Californie où je suis resté le plus de temps. J’ai d’abord réservé un hôtel
avec Eddie et John la première semaine puis Taylor m’a accueilli chez lui la deuxième
semaine.
San Francisco est une magnifique ville connue pour ses collines, rues en montée et
descente, sa baie et sa culture éclectique. C’était aussi la première fois que je voyais
autant de sans abris et toxicomanes allongés dans les rues
J’ai donc rejoint Cavin à SF après la Blading Cup. Il était là pour filmer Cameron Talbott
pour Rollerblade et m’a proposé de me filmer quelques clips pour Nomadeshop en même
temps.
Ivan Narez fêtait aussi son anniversaire sur cette période. Tout le monde était invité chez
lui à Brentwood. La soirée était très agréable, Ivan s’assurait que tous ses invités avaient
assez de quoi manger et boire. J’ai apprécié voir pour ma première fois une traditionnelle
Pinata. La soirée s’est terminée avec une rediffusion de son dernier chef-d’oeuvre, Valo 6.

J’ai vraiment apprécié ce séjour à SF, j’y ai rencontré plein de gens et skaté plusieurs fois
avec Bfree, Philip Moore, Erick Garcia, JP Primiano qui représente ButterTV, Danny Malm. Style
Californien oblige, nous avons skaté dans plusieurs écoles et tout le monde a pu avoir des
clips. Bien que je me sois blessé plusieurs fois, Cavin avait assez de clips pour faire une
courte vidéo de mon passage à SF.

What was the best and worst thing that happened to you on your California trip?

Surprisingly, the worst thing was the injuries I incurred during my trip. First, I dislocated my thumb on the
first street session with Cavin in SF, at the famous 3rd army spot. Then, I pierced my eardrum by
falling badly on my neck few days later, so I wasn’t able to skate until the Razors Warehouse.
And then I fell on a screw and get 8 stitches beneath my left knee.
The best thing was all the great meetings I did ! And I didn’t lose my phone, hahaha !

Quelle est la meilleure, et la pire, chose qui t’est arrivée lors de ce premier
mois en Californie ?

Etonnamment, la pire chose qui m’est arrivé c’est de m’être blessé sérieusement plusieurs
fois lors de ce premier mois : pouce déboité à la première session avec Cavin à San
Francisco, tympan gauche percé et 8 points de suture sous le genou gauche. Forcement j’ai
plus dormi sur mon côté droit ce mois ci !
La meilleure chose qui m’est arrivée c’est toutes les belles rencontres que j’ai fais ! Et je n’ai
pas perdu mon téléphone jajaja

What is your next destination and how did you decide on it ?

I crossed the US border to Mexico the 1st of December to Tijuanna airport and then I flew
direct to Guadalajara.
Everything went well in California, except the injuries I had that complicated a few of my
days. I couldn’t wait to go to Mexico. Mexico is kind of the beginning my real trip because
I’m looking to discover new cultures, manners – Californian is more similar to Europe than
Mexico and South American countries.
The trip continues and I’m hyped about that !

Quelle est la prochaine destination et comment l’as tu appréhendé ?

J’ai passé la frontière des Etats-Unis pour l’aéroport de Tijuanna, Mexique, le 1er décembre.
J’ai ensuite pris un avion direction Guadalajara.
Tout s’est très bien déroulé en Californie, mis appart mes blessures qui ont rendu mes jours
un peu plus compliqué. J’avais hâte d’être au Mexique. En quelque sorte le Mexique est le
réel commencement de mon voyage. L’un des objectifs de ce voyage est de découvrir des
nouvelles cultures et moeurs, cependant la Californie est plus similaire à l’Europe que l’est le
Mexique ou les autres pays Sud Américains.
L’aventure continue et j’attends la suite avec impatience !
