Over the Holidays, Nickel and Dime Skate Shop held a pop up art show and toy drive with the noble goal of donating toys to Union Rescue Mission. Be-Mag, along with The Dreamers Club, Full Plate Co, Skates Stay Strapped, and Trap Ninja Collectibles came out for this event to help make the holidays brighter for families struggling during this economically challenging time.
As a sport constantly talking about youth and the power of community, we should take more agency into causes like this. We should use our tight knit kinships for good in the world and bring to light the value of rollerblading beyond our tricks. We all want to play all day with the toys on our feet—why not expand that sentiment by giving children toys of their own and making their childhoods better. When we host donate & skate events, why not open it up to the general public and mingling in a way that would benefit the public and our community in the long run. If nothing else, a kid out there has a better life because of rollerblading. Isn’t that what our community is about?
I offered my time as a photographer to document the day and memories shared with a pop up photo studio. Maybe this will encourage others in the greater community to follow Nickel and Dime’s owner Alan Idolyantes’ lead and do good in the world.
