It’s now been a little while since the Ghetto Games festival took place in the lovely little city of Ventspils. To get you guys up to speed, here’s what happened: French powerhouse and USD pro Roman Abrate won the 2017 Nils Jansons Invitational again (his third victory to this day), the Hektors fueled before & after-parties went wild again, and the sun kept on shining as blade visitors from all over the place swam into the Baltic Sea… Again.

That pretty much sums it up, if you are into the classic event report template. I’ve written more than my fair share of these, too. When it comes down to Ghetto Games, however, I feel this very special place deserves some special treatment. This was my fourth time in Latvia, and while trying to explain why I keep on coming back year after year, I realized I had written it all down already. This letter I emailed Mr. Nils Jansons a few weeks after the event.
I do actually think this sums it all up:
“Yo Professor,
It’s been a succession of crazy days, so now that I’m finally in Athens with a little more time to settle down, I’d like to say I’m sorry for taking so long. But if I haven’t done much writing, I did take some time to think. It would be easy to write the usual event report, I’ve done it so many times I don’t have to even be at the event anymore, really. But I don’t want to write the usual report, not this time.
Because GG Fest in general, and you Latvian superheros in particular, it all means something special to me. I can’t write the same old report because your hard work deserves more than just a standardized effort on my side too. Coming to Ghetto Games is one of the highlights of my year, every year, and I want the article to try and make people feel exactly why.
The strength of GG Fest goes beyond the blading itself. In the end, it all comes down to you guys, and how you turned a normal blade event into a family reunion. A classic contest, into a vacation on the beach with some of the nicest people to walk this Earth. And this varied group of people from all over the place, into a tight knight community of friends.
For this, I owe you. We all do. And the only appropriate word is this one: PALDIES!
So again, I’m sorry for ruining the media plan. But I want to do my best because you guys deserves no less. I can only hope you’ll enjoy reading it! It should be all wrapped up very soon now, and you’ll get to read the text first. Hope all is well on your side, congrats on the Perception project, you guys truly broke the internetz with this one!
And most important, much love to you Nils, can honestly say I miss your little laugh! Been some incredible times with Ieva and yourself, hope you know how much I enjoyed it, and appreciate your company. I love you beautiful people, thanks for making this a space for everyone to feel welcome and enjoy themselves! More love even,
Freddy.”
