Alex Ryerson of the infamous Bodega Boys has just announced his newest venture in PISCES (short for Post-Industrial Skate Complex Entertainment Service ), which he states will be both a media group AND a brand, specifically creating sustainable products in collaboration with artists and environmental and social activist groups around the world. To kick-start the new project, Alex has just dropped his first full length video titled “GATEWAY“, which features Bear Phillips, Gabriel Talamantes, Silvia Kambouridis, Alex Ryerson, Sam Leviton, and Robby Silcox.
“GATEWAY” also features appearances from Mike Schmitt, Soil Thornton, Dallas Beckett, Sean Grossman, Bella Ybarra, Olivier de Tomas, Jon Louie, Harbor Bickmore, Dominic Bruce, Anddy Feliciano, and Geoff Levy. Alex had this to say about what prompted the creation of PISCES, and he maps out his ambitious goals for the brand in the future. Hear it from the man himself.
I started Bodega Boys back in 2019, and didn’t really intend for it to become a crew per se, but it developed a life of its own among the people who were contributors and creators. Proud that it exists as it does, but I felt there was a void of representation for this huge community in NYC.
And BB now exists basically as a locked in crew. Fast forward to making PISCES. There’s such a big energy in NYC and beyond, and so many good skaters that are under-represented. So I will seek out people in different pockets of the city and elsewhere and give them a platform. Anyhow, long story longer, it is not a crew. I feel very grateful to be a part of this community and hope to express skating in a way that makes people stoked and makes them want to skate, while also feeling included in this really wonderful and weird world of self expression with wheels under our feet.- Alex Ryerson
We applaud Alex for his efforts and for doing it all for the right reasons. Our editor-in-chief Kevin Little gives his quick thoughts after a weekend of binge-watching “GATEWAY” on repeat. Check it out!
I have always been a HUGE fan of the Bodega Boys videos, and to see them branch out and further cover more of the talented individuals in the East Coast got me very excited! Their cinematography is always on-point with perfectly filmed angles and the editing compliments both the skaters featured, highlights the locations filmed as well as features music that drives the video appropriately.
One of the first featured skaters was Gabe Talamantes. If you have been following blading for awhile, you are aware that Gabe has been paying his dues for a very long time but he seems to have recently found the fountain of youth and is skating like a kid half his age. Gabe recently transplanted to NYC from Chicago and has taken to the Big Apple like a fish to water. His skating has looked especially stylish since making the recent switch to Mesmer Skates as well.
Quad skating Queens Bella Ybarra and Silvia Kambouridis also make appearances in “GATEWAY” and further show that our like-minded sports can co-exist and aptly promote both of our cultures together without issue. It is actually quite refreshing to see some of our blading stances being integrated into quad trick repertoire and them creating something completely new and innovative. Hats off to our Quad-kinfolk!
In “GATEWAY” Alex Ryerson also reminds us that his talents are not only relegated to being behind the camera or the editing desk, as his skating is absolutely top-notch and shows a very diverse range of tricks, from technical grinds, rail transfers, stair rides, heel rolls and one of the best cess-slide stair rides I have seen in quite sometime.
Sam Leviton is another individual that has always been one of my favorite skaters featured in the Bodega Bros. series and his clips in “GATEWAY” were the proverbial chef’s kiss! Sam’s tricks are consistently stylish and he rocks the most proper of Ron Jeremy mustaches as well. I definitely look forward to seeing more from Sam in the future. (hint, hint PISCES)
“GATEWAY” was a great introduction to a new media outlet and brand and from the production values of the video, Alex and the boys are already off to a tremendous start and look to be a integral piece in the ever-growing skate scene of the East Coast.
