Music and Setup Session: Rollplayerz - 08/06/02

What is Rollplayerz?

Rollplayerz started sometime in 2007. Kuki Monsta and OliBenet started mixing at around the same point, and subsequently played at the same rollerblader related parties. Constantly pushing and learning from each other, they decided to start Rollplayerz, working together at production and mixing.

While both predominantly play Drum & Bass, Kuki Monsta’s music style is more focused on Ragga Jungle and Jump up, while OliBenet focuses more on Trancestep and Neurofunk. This means that wherever they play, the music is diverse and complimentary.

The name Rollplayerz originated from a theatre production featuring OliBenet, where he had to invent a name for a “fake” company in the show. The name laid dormant for a few years, but became perfectly suited for this new juncture.

OliBenet: My name is something like Oli Benet and I’m a 26 year old rollerskater originally from London, England and now from Barcelona, Spain, and I like to grind on bars.



Kuki Monsta: My name is Javier Campos López but everyone calls me Kuki or Kuki Monsta, because I love eating cookies and smackin’ people down. I like potatoes. I live in Zaragoza.

What is your setup now and what do you like most about it?

OliBenet: The Deshi CH1 Grey skate with white Deshi soulplates, Kizer type M frames and Undercover bearings and Undercover coloured wheels, stock Sifika liners etc.

What do I like about it? Deshi is my favourite skate, I switch about sometimes and everytime I go back to skating my CH1’s I just feel like I get a major boost. I love them because they are light, extremely comfortable, flex perfect, look good etc etc. I love the new Deshi soulplate as it’s so fast and smooth on everything. The groove is also the best ever for torque tricks, and also amazing for backslides especially once you groove it a bit. The Kizer type M frame is the frame I always revert to, I try everything from time to time and always end up coming back to the Kizer type M, there’s just nothing wrong with it, good depth groove, nice and fast.

The main thing right now is the UC coloured wheels. I’m totally tripping on them, they are made from a new compound and it’s like having little motors on your frame. I swear they have actually got me seriously addicted to skating right now, they are so fast and grippy!!!! Totally my current favourite product.


Oli Benet - XGrind

Kuki Monsta: Deshi Harmanus, USD dual plates, Undercover wheels, Jug liners and Kizer Billy O’Neill fluids.
It’s my twelfth pair of Deshi’s as I can’t and won’t skate anything else, and the same goes for Dualplates. It’s a light skate, and what’s most important, it’s exceedingly comfortable.

Whats your music setup and what do you like most about it?

OliBenet: I have 2 x Pioneer 800mk2 decks, an Ecler Nuo3 mixer, 2 behringer 2031a monitors, Pioneer dj5000 headphones. I love it all. It’s cost me too much to pull together but man it’s so addictive and yet frustrating. Why CD’s would be a good question. I thought about it a lot before choosing my decks and asked a lot of advice. Most producers now use the CD decks, you can make your tune and then burn it and play it, not having to wait for vinyl pressing. On top of that I have a lot of producer contacts who send me tracks, and with vinyl it would be useless, not to mention expensive. Ok, what about Final Scratch, mixing from the computer? A good friend of mine took a tour round Europe, and someone spilt a beer on his brand new Macbook, destroying the computer and all his tunes, including his dubplates. I never looked back and haven’t regretted it at all. Plus my neighbour has vinyl so we can jam and switch about. You still have to buy and search for original tracks, as normal CD quality or download quality just isn’t enough.

Production wise I’m using Ableton Live, Soundforge, MIK and Platinum Notes.

What kind of clothing style are you into and what are your favorite items?

OliBenet: Generally I’ll sport anything size L Stygma, unless I’m feeling slim then I’ll wear a size M. My favourite items are some of the older Stygma tees that I can’t get any more, and until Sagona stole it, my quitters never lose Franco hat. Luckily he left a bag of his stuff here to send him, and I can just take my pick from there. Muahahah….

Can you tell us your top 10 music artists?

OliBenet: Why yes, yes I can.

Rawtekk. This guy is from Germany and he comes out with mind numbing tunes that go totally hidden. When I found his myspace it was like discovering Eden!! Since then I have him on my contacts and he has been passing me his productions and they just blow my mind.
Chase & Status. I love the way they mix reggue and rap sounds with the hardest DnB.
John B. Because he has created a whole style of dnb almost single handedly. I totally dig his trance like sound and humour.
Ben Sage. Also Trance influenced, I love practically any tune he has ever touched.
Subsonik. More Trance influenced dnb, of a similar genre to Ben Sage, but a little harder. Absolutely incredible.
Apex. Nice guy, awesome sound. He made a lot of my favourite tunes in the past 2 years with his old collective, Unknown Error. Now represents Stygma.
Spor. Because his exclusive beats destroy your brain.
Noisia. Consistently producing timeless hits.
Black Sun Empire. Dance stylez
Evol Intent. Hard shizzle fo my nizzle.
